Sensible Cyber Security
I’ve wanted to do this sort of presentation for a while now. Most people, I believe, have a genuine concern about internet safety, but they really don’t know where to begin. Some advice is so impractical that you either immediately ignore it, or maybe you do your best for a while, but it doesn’t last. Other advice is so technical that its beyond the reach of most normal users. This talk is for the rest of us. Today I’d like to share with you some sensible, digestible security best practices. And where those best practices are difficult, I’ll offer good habits that may not be technical at all.

Sensible Cyber Security Presentation
"Sensible Cyber Security" presents good advice often given by cyber security experts. Where the advice is too technical or impractical for non-technical people, it breaks down the advice to its most essential elements, and offers practical alternatives for people choosing not to heed the advice. Examples include “Never trust public wi-fi”, “Never click on email links”, and “Never Bank Online”.
The intent of the presentation is not to offer perfect security. The goal is to reduce risk to acceptable levels.

Science On Screen
This presentation was made possible through Science on Screen, an initiative of the Coolidge Corner Theatre with major support from the ALFRED P. SLOAN FOUNDATION. It was presented at the Penn Theatre in Plymouth Michigan on March 23rd, 2025. Our special thanks to Ellen Elliot, Director of the Penn Theater, for helping obtain the grant, and for her tireless efforts to preserve and strengthen the Penn Theatre.
